Islam And Western Philosophy

 What Is Islam?

 

The word Islam is an Arabic word that is derived from Aslama (أسلم) means to submit. The creed or foundation of this religion is about the oneness of God and later the acceptance of Prophet Mohammad was his last and final messenger.

Although the religion of Islam was there since the beginning of times through various prophets, the prophet Mohammad that the present Muslims follow lived in Mecca and Medina around 1400 years ago. The main character of Islam is it based on knowledge. It answer all the question and gives solution to all problem faces by human.

Before someone entering Islam, he must be clear that concept of sole God is very rationale to any human beings alive. Let us put aside the discussion of every religion`s law or jurisprudence. This is because the nature of Law might be rationale to one community but not others. If the main understanding of religion is wrong, then whatever begets from it will be wrong including jurisprudence,ethics,history,culture and others.


What is Philosophy?

 

According to Merriem Webster, philosophy can have different meanings such as wisdom and the study general understanding of values and reality comprising of logic and metaphysics. In a simple word, it is the one main understanding of something.

The word philosophy in Arabic is falsafah (فلسفة). However, this word did not exist in the time of prophet. It was brought in the Abbasid time from the Greek empire.  Another simple word can describe philosophy is ideology. It includes what one understand about something. This understanding will leads to action upon what he understood in the form of action or words.


Western Philosophy

 

If we study the western philosopher such as Aristotle, Socrates,Plato,Nietzsche and others, they only talked about the present of God,history and their own biography. This will not answer the question of the condition of God, purpose of existence, his commandments and others.In addition, the practical to this knowledge is impossible for everyone because it is incomplete.

Those philosopher also do not have one pin point figure such as in Islam. In Islam, we believe that God is the end of the existence and prophet Mohamad is his Messenger. The scholars of Islam derived ideas from both of them. The absence of this concept will cause chaos. The questions such as who is better? Who should we prioritize? Is he reliable? And others will come out and has no answer.


Conclusion

 

The differences between the western and Islam philosophy is now a little bit clear. Thus, it is the responsible for the Muslim to learn and practice of Islam in order to bring back the glorious days of Islam just like the past. The core teaching of Islam is not about gaining money,fame and ranks rather than the proper way of salvation to god.

An action without adequate amount of knowledge will not bring benefits and knowledge without action is pointless as the famous Arabic sayings

 

العلم بلا عمل كالشجرة بلا ثمرة

 

Translation : Knowledge without action is like a tree without fruits (It is there but do not brings any benefits)

Pertentangan Di Antara Falsafah Islam Dan Barat

  Pengenalan       Perlu diketahui bahawa manusia itu terbahagi kepada dua bahagian yang tidak dapat dilihat dengan mata kasar, iaitu akal dan ruh. Tanggapan Islam Terhadap Kemodenan

  Pengenalan     Perlu diketahui bahawa Islam adalah agama yang membuka seluas luasnya kepada pengikutnya untuk beramal. Ini termasuk di dalam hukum hakam yang digariskan oleh ulama. Hanya terdapat sedikit perkara yang wajib dan begitu juga yang haram. Yang lain semuanya bersifat harus. Akan tetapi, ramai di antara penganutnya yang tidak faham hukum hakam ini sehingga ada yang mengatakan Islam agama yang jumud.
